Lions at Play

On Friday 7th, our friends at New Milton Lions held a Quiz Night and we entered two teams.  Lots of head-scratching required and although we failed to win first prize, we did at least manage a podium finish!

The following night our competitive spirits were again to the fore when we hosted a skittles evening against Bournemouth Lions at The Walkford pub.  Whoever won or lost wasn't recorded but it was a lot of fun and the buffet provided by The Walkford was truly amazing.

We kicked off the New Year with about 30 of us going to dinner at La Mamma's in Christchurch.  It was good to catch up with everyone and exchange Christmas stories.

Our Christmas celebrations started with a very lively evening at Swing Unlimited Jazz Club enjoying the music of Swing Unlimited Community Band.  A great evening at Chapel Gate and an excellent Christmas meal.

On Wednesday 15th., a group of us went to Dinner Jazz at the Lord Bute in Highcliffe.  First class music from the Ray Shea Trio to go with absolutely first class food from the Lord Bute.  Superb value.

On the following evening, we tested our stamina to the limit by going to the Ringwood Musical & Dramatic Society Soiree at the Barrington Theatre.  One of our favourite events and always good fun although not, perhaps, for your maiden aunt!

A group of us attended the New Milton Lions annual Charter Dinner at the South Lawns Hotel, Milford-on-Sea.  It's always good to get together with our friends from neighbouring clubs and share gossip and ideas.

Petanque Sunday.  Lions and friends visited the Three Tuns at Bransgore to enjoy a friendly game of Petanque (boules) and lunch in the sunshine.  A very convivial afternoon!

Dinner at the White Buck in Burley.  A good venue for a mass gathering and they looked after us very well.

Some of us fought our way through the crowds to enjoy live music at Stompin' On The Quomps.  Great music in scorching hot sunshine.

Our annual Charter Dinner at the Dudsbury Golf Club and Spa.  A great night out and splendid food and top class service from the Dudsbury.

Lymington Lions Annual Charter Dinner.  A great evening at the South Lawns Hotel with a brilliant cabaret by David Bradley and his tribute act of Michael Buble and Robbie Williams.  Midnight came around far too soon!

Fish & Chips on the beach by All Things Fish.  For the hardy few!

We braved the mini Beast from the East to enjoy Sunday Roast at the Fisherman's Haunt.  Just what was needed on a cold winter's day.

Close enough to Valentine's Day for the cheapskates (sorry, romantics) amongst us but definitely not a Valentines Dinner.  We sent a large party to the Naked Lobster on Avon Beach for a South American evening.  We enjoyed an amazing meal with good, friendly service and a great atmosphere.  Full marks!

Nothing much going on in January as we all recovered from the excesses of the previous month, and of course, we were all doing "dry" January!  February started well when we took two teams to the Poole Lions Quiz Night.  Sadly we didn't win but it was good to be able to support the fund-raising efforts of our fellow Lions and have a lot of fun in the process.

A couple of weeks later, we were very pleased to go to a farewell dinner at the Walhampton Arms in Lymington to say "thank you" to our retired Zone Chairman, Jenny Bithell.  Getting together with old friends from other local Lions clubs is always good and the opportunity to share thoughts and ideas, whilst putting the world of Lions to right is always worthwhile.

The month of Christmas and party time!

On the 8th December we had our Christmas Dinner at the Cliff House at Barton-on-Sea.  Great company and good fun with the usual excellent food and service from Steve and the team.

Later in the month on the 20th December, the music lovers (?) amongst us went to Swing Unlimited Jazz Club for their Christmas celebration. Really, really good fun and great music from the Swing Unlimited Big Band.

On 9th November we went to a Soiree at the Barrington Theatre, Ferndown to support our friends in Ringwood Lions.  A brilliantly funny evening but perhaps not one for maiden aunts!  The following evening, (where do we get the stamina from?) we went to a quiz evening organised by Hythe Lions.  Sadly, we didn't win but neither did we disgrace ourselves and we had a lot of fun.

We went deer hunting!  A walk around the Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary, followed by lunch in the Swan Inn.  In typical Lions fashion, we spent longer in the pub than on the walk.

The Petanque team celebrated the end of the season with dinner at The White Buck, Burley.  We'll gloss over our league position and focus on next year.

Our annual Charter Dinner at the Dudsbury Golf Course.  Black ties and posh frocks!  Another great evening at Dudsbury.

Skittles with Bournemouth Lions at The Walkford.  Great fun and good to socialise with other Lions.

Dinner at La Mamma's in Christchurch.  This was the first time we have been there as a Club and it certainly won't be the last.  Good Italian food and excellent service.

On Good Friday, a group of us travelled to Sturminster Newton to hear popular songs from the opera in a fund-raising event for the Myeloma charity.  A really good night out supporting a worthwhile cause.

Walkers at Keyhaven

Encouraged by the fine weather, a group of us went walking along the coast at Keyhaven and, strangely enough, ended up in The Gun Inn for a very pleasant lunch.  The feedback suggests that this might become a regular feature of our social programme.

Our friends at Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions invited us to their wine tasting evening on the 3rd February and, in the true spirit of Lions solidarity, a group of us were more than pleased to offer them our support.  We tasted six very good wines presented by Graham of New Forest Wines of Ringwood ( His knowledge of wine, and the way he puts it over, is most impressive.  A visit to his shop is a must on our next trip to Ringwood.

On the 30th January,17 of us attended the weekly quiz at The Amberwood in Walkford.( and surprised ourselves by doing reasonably well.  A very good evening and thanks to everyone at The Amberwood for making us so welcome.  We will be back!

The pace hasn't slackened at all.  On December 9th we held our Lions Christmas Dinner at the Cliff House, Barton-on-Sea and 31 Lions and supporters enjoyed a top class meal and were looked after brilliantly well by the Cliff House team.  The live music was an added bonus!

The following afternoon saw a group of us at the Somerford Scouts Christmas Pantomime.  The community spirit in this Scout Group is amazing and it was very obvious that everyone had worked extremely hard to put on this production.  Well done all and thanks for your hospitality!

Even then there was no rest!  Sunday afternoon was President Lorraine's Christmas Drinks soiree.  When did she find time to produce all that food?

On Saturday 17th December, 14 of us were part of a large audience at the Priory to hear the very talented young musicians of the Christchurch Music Centre perform A Musical Christmas Celebration.  This was a fund-raising event in support of Macmillan Caring Locally and in a way, this squared the circle, as Christchurch Lions have supported both organisations.

Finally to the last event of the year.  We love supporting youth organisations and one that we work with is Christchurch Activities for Young People (CAYP  We were delighted to be invited to their Christmas pantomime which was based losely. . . very losely. . on the tale of Robin Hood.  It's hard to say who had the most fun: the audience or the cast but what is sure is that everyone had a great time. Well done to everyone involved - all the hard work paid off!

A very busy time for us socially.  At the begiining of the month, a large group of us went to dinner at Soho's in Christchurch and had a realy good evening. On the 24th November, 20 of us went to the Ringwood Soiree at Verwood Hub.  This was a really funny evening - lots of music and laughter from some very talented people but very definitely not an event for your maiden aunt.!  We'll all be signing up for next year.

Mayor's Charity Quiz

We entered no less than four teams in the Mayor's Charity Quiz at The Cliffhanger on the 27th October.  Sadly, none of our teams won but we all had a lot of fun and we were delighted by the service and quality of food provided by the Cliffhanger (

Mamma Mia

On the 6th October, ten of us went to see Mamma Mia at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton.  A great production and a really great night out.

President's Lunch

On 10th September, Lorraine and Barry hosted lunch in their garden (it was going to be a barbecue.)   We all enjoyed a very convivial afternoon, despite the wind and rain, and tried to ignore the fact that we all had an early start the following day for the monthly car boot sale.

Charter Anniversary Dinner Dance

Our annual dinner dance celebrating the founding of our Club in 1965 was held on the 9th July.  Once again we were superbly well looked after by the Dudsbury Golf Club.  Dancing was to music by Strictly Dancing Plus disco, playing the music you just have to dance to.  Not only was there "dad dancing" but grandad and grandma were strutting their stuff as well!

Sadly we were all having too much fun to take decent photographs.

Petanque at the Cliff House, Barton-on-Sea

Our Petanquers accepted a challenge from the Cliff House team and had a great evening, playing on a petanque terrain with the best view anywhere.

Queen's Birthday Barbecue

Our Treasurer, Liz, hosted a BBQ to celebrate the Queen's 90th Birthday on the 11th.June.  The dress code of red, white and blue gave rise to some interesting outfits!

Lymington & Brockenhurst Fun Quiz

We supported our friends at Lymington and had a lot of fun at their Fun Quiz.  We came within one point of winning too.

Fish 'n Fizz

On 15th April nearly the whole club, together with a number of our friends, went to the Cliff House at Barton-on-Sea (  They looked after us very well and a great time was had by all.  We also noted that they play Petanque!

Wine Tasting with Ringwood Lions

A small but select group of us enjoyed a most convivial evening with our friends at Ringwood Lions.  Well done to New Forest Wines of Ringwood for a most informative talk and some really good wines.

Dinner at The Kings

The Club "Christmas Dinner" was held over until the 22nd January, when we were all a little less busy and we had a very convivial evening at The Kings Arms in Christchurch, who looked after us exceedingly well.  We will be back!

18th December - Beer & Skittles

We started Christmas on a roll with Beer & Skittles at the East Christchurch Sports & Social Club.  A very good turnout of members and friends made for a very convivial evening.

50th Charter Anniversary Dinner

On the 21st November 2015 we celebrated our 50th Anniversary by holding a Dinner Dance at the Dudsbury Golf Club Hotel and Spa.  All our members and guests had a really enjoyable evening and Dudsbury was a splendid venue with a great meal and very attentive and helpful staff.

Another meeting at The Somerford, but this time for our Christmas Dinner.  Our special thanks to the management and staff of The Somerford for an enjoyable evening and for all their support during the year.

49th Annual Charter Dinner

On Saturday 15th November we held our annual charter dinner at the Highcliffe Golf Club, when the guest of honour was the Mayor Denise Jones.  We were delighted to welcome fellow Lions from other Clubs in our Zone and the evening can best be summed up as: " Good Food, Good Friends, Good Fun "

We were there!

Beach Party - 17th July

A first for Christchurch Lions.  We rented a beach hut at Avon Beach and chilled out in the sunshine with a barbecue.   Next year we'll ramp this event up and have a party!

Handover Dinner - 19th June

A hot June evening saw us gather at The Amberwood in Walkford for our annual handover dinner when the Presidential chain of office was formally handed over to our new President, Margaret Taylor.  For the football fans among us, it was also the night that England played Argentina and lost. . .

Quiz Night - 25th April 2014

Over 40 Lions and friends enjoyed a quiz night held at Highcliffe Golf Club.  The questions were pitched at the right level (i.e. not too hard) and we were all grateful to the President's team who took it upon themselves to ensure that none of our guests were embarrassed by winning the wooden spoon!  The Golf Club laid on a splendid meal and Quizmaster Maurice was on top form.

Petanque - 14th April 2014

A new event for Christchurch Lions when a number went to the Three Tuns in Bransgore to try out their petanque "terrain."  We were fortunate in choosing a balmy spring evening and discovered that one or two members have hitherto unexpected competitive streaks.  For the record, the ladies greatly enjoyed beating the men and are looking for stronger opposition!

Tour of Ringwood Brewery - 20th March 2014
